Requests for marriage records and any birth or death records which might exist previous to 1909 should be addressed to the clerk of the superior court in the appropriate county seat (see County Resources). The Department of Library, Archives, and Public Records, (Arizona State Archives, 1700 West Washington, State Capital, Phoenix, Arizona 85007) has territorial records of marriage licenses in their manuscript collection.

Divorces may be found in civil court records in the county although responsibility for divorce records in Arizona has varied. Originally part of the Territorial Legislature (1863), it moved to the district courts (see Court Records) during the 1870s. The specific court with the responsibility for divorce records within the superior court has changed over time.

They have the following records:

  • Birth Certificates: the State Office of Vital Records has birth records from the July 1909 to 1989 and Also abstracts of records filed in counties before 1909. You may apply in person at the State Office of Vital Records in Phoenix, send your request by mail, or file a request for expedited service on-line.. You may request a certified copy of a birth certificate in several different ways for births that occurred in Arizona. You may, in many cases, obtain a certified copy of a birth certificate for a birth that occurred in Arizona after 1989, at the county health department in the county where the birth occurred.   • Death Certificates: the State Office of Vital Records has death records since July 1909. You may apply in person at the State Office of Vital Records in Phoenix, send your request by mail, or file a request for expedited service on-line.. You may request a certified copy of a death certificate in several different ways for births that occurred in Arizona. You may, in many cases, obtain a certified copy of a death certificate for a death that occurred within the last 30 days at the county health department in the county where the death occurred.   • Marriage & Divorce Certificates: Available from Clerk of Superior Court in county where marriage license was obtained or divorce granted.

  • Order In Person: Same day service is not available for certified copies of certificates. Applications will be accepted and the certified copies will be mailed to the applicant.     To apply in person you must bring the following:

    • A valid government-issued picture identification which bears your signature.
    • Proof of eligibility.
    • Appropriate fee. Acceptable payment methods are: cash, traveler's checks, cashier's checks, money orders, Visa, or MasterCard. Cashier's checks and money orders must be for the exact amount and made payable to Office of Vital Records.
