The Arizona Historical Society has newspapers on microfilm for Arizona and surrounding states. The Arizona State Archives has a catalog listing newspapers on microfilm available for interlibrary loan. Loans are for a two week period, and there is no charge for the loan.

A cooperative effort is underway between the Arizona Historical Society and the libraries in Arizona to microfilm holdings of newspapers in various libraries. For the present, the publication by Estelle Lutrell, Newspapers and Periodicals of Arizona (Tucson, Ariz.: University of Arizona Press, 1949), serves as a guide to available newspapers. The following newspapers, with place of publication and date of their first issue, are either in original or microfilm form and can be found at the Arizona Historical Society or Sharlot Hall Museum, West Gurley Street, Prescott, Arizona 86301:

  • San Pedro Valley New-Sun, Benson, 1892.
  • Review, Bisbee, 1898.
  • The Copper Era, Clifton, 1889.
  • Florence Reminder & Blade-Tribune, Florence, 1882.
  • Arizona Silver Belt, Globe, 1878.
  • Mohave Daily Miner, Kingman, 1882.
  • Mesa Tribune, Mesa, 1890.
  • Arizona Business Gazette, Phoenix, 1880.
  • The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, 1890.
  • The Courier, Prescott, 1882.
  • White Mountain Independent, Show Low, 1888.
  • Daily News Tribune, Tempe, 1887.

The following historical newspapers are on microfilm: Weekly Arizonan (1859–1912); (Tucson) Arizonian (1859); and The Arizona Miner (1864–80).

Arizona Highways and Journal of Arizona History are located in numerous libraries around the country. Two genealogical publications are the Copper State Bulletin, the current publication of the Arizona State Genealogical Society, and The Genealogical and Historical Magazine of the Arizona Temple District, published 1924-49. The most extensive collection of manuscript materials is at the Arizona State Archives and the Arizona State Historical Society.

In the recent past, much attention has been directed toward preserving, making accessible, and microfilming early Spanish and Mexican records. Manuscript collections of much of the material can be found at both repositories.

The Arizona State University Arizona Collection includes papers of politicians, family papers, labor and mining business papers, and collections for the American Indians. They have digitized some of their collections. One such collection being digitized and online is the Hayden Arizona Pioneer Biographies Collection. These can be found at <www.asu.edu/lib/archives>.
