Bent County was created on February 6, 1874 and Split from Huerfano County and former Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal land. The county was named for William Bent. The county seat is Las Animas.
Bent County is bordered by Kiowa County (north), Prowers County (east), Baca County ( southeast), Las Animas County (southwest), Otero County (west).
