Fremont County was created on November 1, 1861 and was created as one of the 17 original counties of the Territory of Colorado. The county was named for John Charles Frémont. The county seat is Cañon City.

Fremont County is bordered by Teller County (north), El Paso County ( northeast), Pueblo County (southeast), Custer County ( south), Saguache County (southwest), Chaffee County ( northwest), Park County (northwest).
