Garfield County was created on February 10, 1883 and was split from Summit County. The county was named for James Abram Garfield. The county seat is Glenwood Springs.
Garfield County is bordered by Rio Blanco County (north), Routt County (northeast), Eagle County ( east), Pitkin County (southeast), Mesa County (south), Grand County, Utah (southwest), Uintah County, Utah (northwest).
