Mineral County was created on March 27, 1893 and was split from Hinsdale County, Rio Grande County and Saguache County. The county was named for plentiful mineral deposits found in the area. The county seat is Creede.
Mineral County is bordered by Saguache County (northeast), Rio Grande County (east), Archuletal County (south), Hinsdale County (west).
