Pitkin County was created on February 23, 1881 and was split from Gunnison County. The county was named for Frederick Walker Pitkin. The county seat is Aspen .

Pitkin County is bordered by Eagle County ( northeast), Lake County (east), Chaffee County ( southeast), Gunnison County (south), Mesa County (west), Garfield County (northwest).
