San Juan County was created on Janurary 31, 1876 and was split from Lake County. The county was named for San Juan River. The county seat is Silverton .

San Juan County is bordered by Ouray County (north), Hinsdale County (east), La Plata County (south), Montezuma County (southwest), Dolores County ( west), San Miguel County (northwest), .
