Yuma County was created on March 15, 1889 and was formed from Washington County. The county was named for the Quechan (Yuma) Nation of Native Americans. The county seat is Wray.
Yuma County is bordered by Phillips County (north), Chase County, Nebraska ( northeast), Cheyenne County, Kansas (east), Dundy County, Nebraska (east), Kit Carson County (south), Washington County (west), Logan County (northwest).
