Bonner County was created on February 21, 1907 and was formed from Kootenai County. The county was named for Edwin L. Bonner, originator of a 1864 ferry service on the Kootenai River . The county seat is Sandpoint.

Bonner County is bordered by Boundary County (north), Lincoln County, Montana (east), Sanders County, Montana, Shoshone County, Kootenai County (south), Spokane County, Washington (southwest), Pend Oreille County, Washington (northwest).
