
The thirty-ninth county formed. Breckinridge County is located in western Kentucky on the Ohio River. It has an area of 565 square miles. Breckinridge County was created from a portion of Hardin County on December 7, 1799, and was named in honor of Kentucky statesman John Breckinridge. The county seat is HARDINSBURG, named for Capt. William Hardin, one of the early settlers of the area.
The three incorporated towns are Hardinsburg, Cloverport, and Irvington. The population of the county was 14,789 in 1970; 16,861 in 1980; and 16,312 in 1990. The Official County Government Website is located at http://www.breckinridgecountyky.com/.
