
Butler County, the fifty-third county in order of formation, is located in the Western Coal Field region of Kentucky. Its 431 square miles. The Green River flows through the southwest part of the state. The county was formed from parts of Logan and Ohio counties on January 18, 1810. It was named for Gen. Richard Butler, a Revolutionary War soldier from Pennsylvania, who was killed by Indians at St. Clair's Defeat in 1791.
