Hart County, Kentucky

Located in the south-central part of the state in the Pennyroyal region, Hart County was the sixty-first in order of formation. Created on January 28, 1819, out of portions of Hardin and Barren counties.

The 412-square-mile county is named for Capt. Nathaniel G.T. Hart (17841813), a Lexington lawyer and brother-in-law of Henry Clay, who was captured and killed by Indians at the Battle of the River Raisin. MUNFORDVILLE is the county seat.

The population of Hart County was 13,980 in 1970; 15,402 in 1980; and 14,890 in 1990. The Official County Government Website is located at http://www.hartcounty.ky.gov/.
