
Jackson County, the 105th county in order of formation, lies in southeastern Kentucky on the western fringe of the Cumberland Plateau. It was established in 1858, and named for President Andrew Jackson. The county was formed out of parts of Rockcastle, Owsley, Madison, Clay, Estill and Laurel counties, which border it, along with Lee County, and has an area of 346 square miles. The county seat is McKEE.
