Jackson County, the 105th county in order of formation, lies in southeastern Kentucky on the western fringe of the Cumberland Plateau. It was established in 1858, and named for President Andrew Jackson. The county was formed out of parts of Rockcastle, Owsley, Madison, Clay, Estill and Laurel counties, which border it, along with Lee County, and has an area of 346 square miles. The county seat is McKEE.

The population of the county was 10,005 in 1970; 11,996 in 1980; and 11,955 in 1990. The Official County Government Website is located at http://www.jacksoncounty.ky.gov/.
