
Laurel County, the eightieth county in order of formation, is located in southeastern Kentucky. The county has an area of 434 square miles and was created on December 21, 1825, from sections of Whitley, Clay, Knox and Rockcastle counties. The prescribed boundaries of the new county were the Rockcastle River on the north, and metes and bounds on the other three sides. The latter were poorly defined, and frequent changes were made in the boundary. LONDON is the county seat.
