
The 117th county in order of formation, Leslie County is located in southeastern Kentucky in the Eastern Coal Field region. Leslie County was formed by an act of the General Assembly on March 29, 1878, from sections of Clay, Harlan and Perry counties and named for Preston H. Leslie, governor of Kentucky (1871-75). The county seat is HYDEN, named in honor of state Sen. John Hyden, one of those responsible for establishing the county.
