The twenty-sixth county in order of formation, Livingston County is located in the "big rivers" section of western Kentucky. It was created on December 13, 1798, from a section of Christian County. It was named for Robert R. Livingston, who helped to draft the Declaration of Independence and was minister to France, where he assisted in arranging the Louisiana Purchase. SMITHLAND is the county seat.

The population of Livingston County was 7,596 in 1970, 9,219 in 1980; and 9,062 in 1990. The Official County Government Website is located at http://www.livingstonco.ky.gov/.

Federal Population Schedules that exist for Livingston County, Kentucky are 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (fragment, see below), 1900, 1910, 1910, 1920 and 1940.
