
Martin County lies in the Appalachian Mountains, in the easternmost reaches of the commonwealth. The 116th county formed, it was made from portions of Lawrence, Floyd, Pike and Johnson counties, which, with the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River on the east, form its boundaries. Martin County, formed September 1, 1870, was named for Col. John P Martin, a state senator and U.S. congressman from Prestonsburg. The county seat was moved from Warfield to a more central location at INEZ in 1873.
