Mason County, Kentucky

Mason County, the eighth county in order of formation, is located in the Outer Bluegrass region of northeastern Kentucky. Named for statesman George Mason of Virginia, whose writings influenced Thomas Jefferson, the county was established by the Virginia legislature in 1788 from Bourbon County. Nineteen Kentucky counties were later formed from the original Mason County. Hemp and tobacco were the earliest crops of the rich, productive soil. The limestone base gave the name to the original landing place on the Ohio River, Limestone (now MAYSVILLE), which is the county seat.

The county's population was 17,273 in 1970; 17,765 in 1980; 16,666 in 1990. The Official County Government Website is located at http://www.masoncountykentucky.com.
