Perry County, the sixty-eighth county in order of formation, lies in the southeastern section of Kentucky, at the headwaters of the Kentucky River. In the years following the War of 1812, the population of eastern Kentucky grew slowly but steadily, and in 1819 the citizens of two counties, Clay and Floyd, petitioned the state for the creation of a new county, with a less-distant county seat. Perry County, named to honor Oliver Hazard Perry, hero of the War of 1812, was thus created on November 2, 1820. Five other counties were later carved from the territory of Perry County.
