The fifty-ninth county in order of formation, Whitley County is located in southeastern Kentucky, along the Tennessee state line. The county was formed January 17, 1818, from a section of Knox County and was named in honor of Col. William Whitley, a Kentucky pioneer and Indian fighter. The county seat, WILLIAMSBURG, was originally called Whitley Courthouse.
The population of Whitley County was 24,145 in 1970; 33,396 in 1980; and 33,326 in 1990. The Official County Government Website is located at http://www.whitleycountyfiscalcourt.com/.

Federal Population Schedules that exist for Whitley County, Kentucky are 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (fragment, see below), 1900, 1910, 1910, 1920 and 1940.
