Kentucky Census Records
Statewide Records that exist for Kentucky are 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (fragment, see below), 1900, 1910, 1910, 1920 and 1940. Earlier U.S. censuses for Kentucky were destroyed, but published tax lists serve as a replacements for the lost 1790
and 1800 censuses. Extracts and indexes for many of Kentucky's censuses have been compiled and published. Original or microfilm copies of the federal census returns are available at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. Several Kentucky indexes to censuses predate those published by AISI.
Other Federal Schedules to look at when researching your family tree in Kentucky are Industry and Agriculture Schedules availible for the years 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. Slave Schedules exist for 1850 & 1860. The Mortality Schedules for the years 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. Union Veterans Schedules were conducted in 1890 but only returns for sixty-five Kentucky counties remain of the 1890 Union veterans and widows schedule of the federal census of Kentucky.
State School Census for Kentucky infrequently enumerated public school students beginning in 1888. Scattered records are at the office of the respective county Board of Health or Board of Education. Some are maintained by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and the Kentucky Historical Society.

- Kentucky Census, Reconstructed, 1790
: In 1790, the area which was to become the state of Kentucky in 1792, lay within the state of Virginia. As a result, the 1790 Federal Census for Virginia contains records for residents of the soon to be created state of Kentucky. This collection is a reconstruction of what the census would have contained had Kentucky been a state. It was compiled from personal tax records now housed in the Kentucky State Historical Society. Each entry lists the name of the tax-payer, assumed to be the head of household who would have appeared in the 1790 Census, and the date of the tax record from which the information came.

- Second Census of Kentucky 1800
: This "second census" of Kentucky is an alphabetical list of 32,000 taxpayers and is based on original tax lists on file in the Kentucky Historical Society. Information given includes the county of residence and the date of the tax list in which the individual is listed. The genealogist finding a name of interest can then refer to the tax list (all are on microfilm), where he will find such information as the amount of land owned and its location, the number of individuals in various categories attached to the household, and other background information.

- 1890 United States Federal Census Fragment for Kentucky.
These records have been extracted from the remaining population schedules for the 1890 Federal Census, which was destroyed by a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC on 10 January 1921. The surviving fragments consists of 1,233 pages or pieces, including enumerations for Alabama, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas.
