No single county's records have been significantly abstracted or transcribed, making a courthouse visit essential. County records vary widely from county to county in both quality and quantity.

Mississippi Probate Records and Land Records
The office of the probate judge is the county office where the most significant genealogical records are created and maintained in Mississippi. A variety of records are housed in this office.

Information recorded in the collection includes patentee name, land office, legal description, etc.
- Land Claims in Mississippi Territory, 1789-1834 - This database gives information about public land claims made by early settlers of the Mississippi Territory. Information was compiled and published in the American State Papers by Walter Lowrie, who was secretary of the senate at the time, and encompasses volumes I and II of that series. Entries include the register's number, name of claimant, name of original grantee or claimant, quantity of land, and date of the patent.

Mississippi Tax Records
Original tax records are maintained at the local county courthouse. Mississippi Department of Archives and History has copies of the earlier tax records, but there are gaps in dates and records. Some counties have published various years of tax rolls.
The Tax Assessors Office is required to annually assess all taxable property within the County, and is responsible for setting fair, uniform and accurate values for each parcel of real and personal property. The Tax Assessor is also charged by the Board of Supervisors to maintain current ownership maps of the county. In addition to these appraisal duties, we work daily with local and national agencies to promote the economic well being of the County and its citizens.
The Assessor lists and places a value on all real estate within the county and also on personal property (which includes such things as machinery, office equipment, and similar items). Maps, records, and other documents are kept to help establish the value of such property. The Assessor presents these tax rolls to the Board of Supervisors for approval. He or she also helps homeowners file for homestead exemption, which allows some of the homeowner's property to be exempt from property (ad valorem) taxes.
