Chouteau County was created on 1865 and was formed from Original County. The county was named for Jean Pierre Chouteau. The county seat is Fort Benton .
Chouteau County is bordered by Liberty County (north), Hill County (north), Blaine County (east), Fergus County, Judith Basin County (south), Cascade County (south), Teton County (west), Pondera County (northwest).
