In the office of the clerk of the district court, available records include felony cases, cases of appeal, divorce cases, civil cases, and naturalization records. The naturalization records should include declarations of intention, petitions for naturalization, and second or final papers. The Nebraska State Historical Society has many county naturalization records. Many are also on microfilm at the FHL.
Probate records are located in the office of the clerk of the county court. These records may include wills, estate records, guardianships, bonds, and probate books. Although adoption records are located in this office, they are closed to the public. Some counties have their probate records on file at the Nebraska State Historical Society, and microfilm copies of many are at the FHL.
A card index to pre-1906 naturalizations for all the counties in Nebraska, western Iowa, and some counties in eastern Iowa in the 1930s and 1940s was compiled as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. This index has been microfilmed and can be searched at the Nebraska State Historical Society. Each card contains the name, country of origin, date of naturalization, and the court, county, and state of naturalization. The name of the state does not appear on cards for many Nebraska counties. The reverse side contains the type of naturalization and the volume and page number where the record is located. This index includes only those who received their final papers in Nebraska. It does not reportthose who only declared their intention in Nebraska. The Nebraska State Historical Society has over eighty percent of the naturalization records for the counties in the state from the district courts. The FHL and the society have large collections of U.S. District Court records (National Archives) on microfilm.
Many tax records are still held at the county level; many taken before 1912 have been sent to the Nebraska State Historical Society. The society is continually collecting county records. At present they have tax records for about half of the counties and assessment records for many others, all for various periods of time. The researcher should contact the Public Records at the Nebraska State Historical Society to learn of its holdings for a particular county before contacting the county. County tax records, real and personal, are located in the office of the county treasurer at the county seat.
