In 1861 the Union was able to raise a volunteer regiment of infantry that served with California troops. In 1862 headquarters were established at Fort Churchill for the military district of Utah and Nevada, and in 1863 six companies of cavalry and a like number of infantry outfits were raised. These Union soldiers did not serve outside their own region. The militia was under the jurisdiction of the legislature. The National Archives has indexes of the army volunteers for the state; these are also available through the FHL and <www.ancestry.com>.
Although the Nevada State Library and Archives has service records for World War I through 1972 and copies of discharge papers, access is restricted to the person of record or immediate family. The FHL has microfilm of the WWI Draft Registration Cards, while <www.ancestry.com> has indexed the cards online for the entire state.
