Maps, Atlases & Gazetteers - Maps are an invaluable part of family history research, especially if you live far from where your ancestor lived. Because political boundaries often changed, historic maps are critical in helping you discover the precise location of your ancestor's hometown, what land they owned, who their neighbors were, and more.
The State Archives and Historical Research Library holds a one-reel microfilm index (Series 1121) to Cartographic Records of North Dakota, which are in the custody of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
County plat books and atlases from 1884, including Andreas’ Historical Atlas of Dakota, are housed at the archives as well as other repositories with North Dakota collections. A list of North Dakota county plat books and atlases is available at <www.discovernd.com/hist>.
See William C. Sherman, Prairie Mosaic: An Ethnic Atlas of Rural North Dakota (Fargo, N.Dak.: North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies, 1983), which will be most helpful, as will Northwestern Gazetteer: Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Montana Gazetteer and Business Directory (St. Paul: R. L. Polk and Co., 1914).
