
Kent County was created on June 11, 1750 and was formed from part of Providence County. Kent County was named for the County of Kent, England.
Kent County is bordered by Providence County (north), Bristol County (east), Washington County (south), New London County, Connecticut (west), Windham County, Connecticut (west), Newport County.
Kent County Cities, towns, and villages (Villages are census division, but have no separate corporate existence from the towns they are in.) include Coventry, East Greenwich, Warwick, West Greenwich, West Warwick.

The major genealogical use for counties in Rhode Island is the pursuit of court records and federal census returns. Before 1729 there were no county courts in Rhode Island. Some of the vital records have been published in “county” groups, but the records themselves exist only on a town level. Modern court records are at the superior court at the county seat; earlier ones have been moved (see Court Records).
Coventry was established in 1639 and incorporated in 1743 from Warwick. It has Land Records from 1741, Probate Records from 1741 and Court Records from 1741.
